CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Hello

Welcome to Bramley for what will probably be our last home game of the season.

Today we play the Colchester Gladiators in the most important game in the history of the club. Victory would see us in our first ever bowl game but we all realise the tough job we have ahead of us today.

May I take this opportunity of congratulating the Gladiators on an outstanding season and welcome them and their supporters to Yorkshire for what promises to be a most exciting game.

This is my last chance to express my sincere thanks to certain people for their help throughout the season.

My Thanks to Anne and Roy Cheesewright for keeping the stats both home and away, to our commentators Jeremy Dove, Steve Clift and Dave Smith for making a difficult job sound easy. To our physio Andy Ganswell and his smiling assistant "Hamish" who have kept the team in good shape all year. Thanks to all the guys on the chain crew and the ball boy squads for their help come rain or shine. Special thanks to our cheerleaders, The Blue Cats, who have astounded us all with their boundless energy and unfailing loyalty. We have seen many other teams cheerleaders but none can match our girls for enthusiasm. Finally to our supporters I would like to express the thanks of all the team members. Your support has been remarkable throughout the season.

I received a letter from an Oxford supporter this week in which he stated "I have never witnessed such warmth of support anywhere in the country". We endorse his opinion. Lets hear it this afternoon

Cheers
Mick Hardaker

GRIDIRON IN BRIEF

The game of American Football is played with 11 men in each team, yet there is unlimited substitution of players which means squads often consist of around 40 players or more The winner of the game is the tam that, at the end of four quarters of play (15 minutes each quarter) has scored the most points can be scored as follows:-
1. TOUCHDOWN - 6 points. This is scored when a player either carried the ball over the goal line into the opposing teams end zone or by catching a pass in the end zone
2. POINT AFTER TOUCHDOWN - 1 point. After a touchdown you have the chance to covert the ball between the uprights or you may run or pass the ball in to the endzone for 2 points
3. FIELDGOAL - 3 points. This may occur any time during a game when the ball is place kicked through the uprights
4. SAFETY - 2 points. These are awarded when an offensive ball carrier get tackled in his own end zone.

The game starts with a player from one team kicking the ball into his opponents half of the field. The team returning the ball then proceed as far up the field as possible until the ball carrier is tackled. From the position of the tackle (line of scrimmage) the team with the ball (offence) must gain 10 yards of the field in four attempts (downs) the team trying to prevent them gaining 10 yards is the defence. If the offence fails to gain the yardage it must give the ball to the other team at the point where the fourth down occurred. Usually on the fourth down, a team not likely to gain the necessary yards will choose to kick the ball as far as possible into the opponents half of the field (punt). It is almost certain they will lose possession but they will have a better field position.
If a team does gain 10 yards in four downs, it retains the ball and tries to gain another 10 yards in 4 downs.
By successfully and repeatedly covering the 10 yards with each set of four downs, the team not only keeps possession of the ball but also moves downfield towards the opponents goal in search of a touchdown

LEEDS COOL CATS

THE LEEDS COUGARS SUPPORTERS CLUB

This is it. The big one. Lets make as much noise as possible and show the Gladiators supporters we mean business.

Proposed Cardiff trip

After today's game a meeting will be held in the stand, not in the bar. This is to discuss the trip to Cardiff should we be successful today, and to answer your questions. Here are the details so far: depart Leeds bus station at 0830 Sunday. Depart Morrisons car park, Morley at 0930 Sunday.

The fare will be 8 pound per adult. I must have a minimum of 90 adults as I have booked 2 coaches. If 90 paying adults go then the odd 10 seats will be given to children under 10 years old free, unless of course more than 90 people want to go. It is important that you give Eddie a deposit for the trip, you can pay him today or by post, but once you have booked a place it will have to be paid for whether you turn up or not. Please only give your name if you will abide by this ruling. The coaches have to be paid for even if they are half full. Book with Eddie now or write to him at 5 Marshall Avenue, Crossgates, Leeds 15, telephone 606966. If you book by phone it must be confirmed in writing. I only make the above conditions for the good of the club

The first of our monthly meetings will take place on Thursday 3rd September at 7:30pm at the Grove Inn, off Water Lane, Leeds. To get to the Grove by car from City Square go down the dark arches (side of city station), past dragonara hotel, over river then unfortunately you have to go all the way round the one way system and then turn left in to grove road which is between sweet street and water lane. By foot just turn right into water lane and you should see the grove on the left. Mick Hardaker has promised to be there to answer any questions or grievances and to give a view of the management side of the club. Children are welcome. Meetings will then be held at the first Thursday in each month at the same place and time.

Leeds Cool Cat sew-on badges will be available today but there are not so many left. This will be the last batch this year so get yours now. Tee Shirts are also available - see David

And now for the most shocking news this season!!! The team photos are here. Do I hear a sigh of relief. Collect yours as and when you see me at today's game. Members first please, your name will be ticked off my list

Today's raffle is in aid of the team travel funds. The prizes are (subject to confirmation), an away game team shirt (probably Muzzies), 2 track suits and a case of Budweiser beer. Excellent prizes you must agree. Get your tickets from the sales Girls??

There has been no response to my request for committee members so unless anyone has any strong objection the club will be run by myself, Eddie and Val Jackson, David and Ann Sutcliffe. Eddie will be in charge of transport. David will look after money raising events, Val and Ann will help wherever they can (they are very versatile), and I will continue as Secretary/Treasurer.

That seems to be all for now so sit back and enjoy the game

Eric

COUGARS V OXFORD BULLDOGS

QUARTER FINAL PLAY OFF - PREMIER DIVISION

Leeds Cougars 46 Oxford Bulldogs 14

Played on one of the few warm and sunny days of the summer, the Cougars and Bulldogs did battle in front of 1500 fans. Glenn called correctly and elected to take 1st possession of the ball.

Eddy Harry ran the kick off back 23 yards to the 31 yard line. Tiggy lost 5 yards on the 1st play but Paul Pryce recovered 4 yards. On 3rd down and eleven Tiggy broke clear up the middle on a draw, cut to the right and 60 yards later was in the end zone for 6. Paul made it 8-0 with the PAT and the Cougars were on their way.

The Bulldogs from their own 13 yard line took 3 plays to go 7 yards and on a fourth down were going for it. Harriott took the hand-off up the middle but only made 1 yard. Steve "Bull" McKnight stopping him dead. Turnover and the Cougars had great field position on the Bulldogs 21 yard line. two plays later and Tiggy scored his second from 8 yards which made the score 14-0

Oxford moved the ball 45 yards on eight plays before Paul Muscroft recovered Simmons fumble (after a hit from Moss Green). Cougars should have scored on their 3rd possession but Glenn Stevens pass to Sammy Pryce, open in the end zone, was dropped

Swooping possession 4 times, the Cougars on their 5th drive got in to the end zone when Tiggy romped 24 yards to score. Tim Casey caught a 2 pointer to make it 22-0

With the 1st half coming to an end Sammy caught a Stevens bomb and raced in to the endzone to score on a 56 yard passing play. 28-0

The second half started with Oxford driving 77 yards finishing with QB Johnson scoring from 2 yards out.

Leeds reply was swift, 4 plays and 50 yards later and Steve Bertram was celebrating his own 24 yard touchdown run 34-6

The fourth quarter began with the Cougars going 63 yards on 7 plays and Tiggy scoring his 4th touchdown fro 5 yards out and extending the lead to 40-6. Johnson , Oxfords QB came back with a 10 play drive which finished with Simmons getting in to the endzone with a 1 yard dive over the top. Whitford caught a 2pt pass and brought the score back to 40-14

Cougars final score, again by Tiggy bell was a real team effort, moving the ball with ease from their own 31 making the final score 46:14. A similar performance today will see the Cougars through to Cardiff

Sammy Pryce

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Kathy and myself to thank everybody for their generous collection during the Oxford game after our recent burglary
