CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

Hello and welcome to Bramley

Again I must apologise to anyone who has been inconvenienced by our enforce move to Bramley, but pressure was put on both us and the Council to ensure Leeds Utd had the best possible surface to play on in their promotion push

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Bramley for their help at such short notice. I know most of us have a soft spot for McClaren field anyway

last weeks game turned out to be not quite as tough as we thought it might be but it did give us a chance to try some new plays and use the passing game a little more. Had the receivers been in better catching form Glens figures would have been much better than they were. Days like that look bad for a quarterback at the seasons end when in reality 80 percent of the passes were on target, lets hope the boys improve this week

I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the Crewe Railroaders and hope that after today they have a good winning season with no injuries. We already have two with Red Kershaw breaking his forearm last week and Eddy Harry being kept out due to surgery he had on his finger. I wish them both a speedy recovery

Next weeks game will be at Bramley again when we entertain Derby, who I'm sure will be looking to avenge the earlier result between the teams. We then have four away games, details of which will be printed in next weeks programme. It is a great help to have support at away games and I Know all the players feel the same way.

Quite a few new faces on the team this year with players from Mansfield and Bradford making the switch at the end of the'86 season plus some outstanding rookies who have joined us following the trials. I am sure you will make them all welcome

Now relax, sit back and enjoy the game.

Mick Hardaker - Chairman

GRIDIRON IN BRIEF

The game of American Football is played with 11 men in each team, yet there is unlimited substitution of players which means squads often consist of around 40 players or more The winner of the game is the tam that, at the end of four quarters of play (15 minutes each quarter) has scored the most points can be scored as follows:-
1. TOUCHDOWN - 6 points. This is scored when a player either carried the ball over the goal line into the opposing teams end zone or by catching a pass in the end zone
2. POINT AFTER TOUCHDOWN - 1 point. After a touchdown you have the chance to covert the ball between the uprights or you may run or pass the ball in to the endzone for 2 points
3. FIELDGOAL - 3 points. This may occur any time during a game when the ball is place kicked through the uprights
4. SAFETY - 2 points. These are awarded when an offensive ball carrier get tackled in his own end zone.

The game starts with a player from one team kicking the ball into his opponents half of the field. The team returning the ball then proceed as far up the field as possible until the ball carrier is tackled. From the position of the tackle (line of scrimmage) the team with the ball (offence) must gain 10 yards of the field in four attempts (downs) the team trying to prevent them gaining 10 yards is the defence. If the offence fails to gain the yardage it must give the ball to the other team at the point where the fourth down occurred. Usually on the fourth down, a team not likely to gain the necessary yards will choose to kick the ball as far as possible into the opponents half of the field (punt). It is almost certain they will lose possession but they will have a better field position.
If a team does gain 10 yards in four downs, it retains the ball and tries to gain another 10 yards in 4 downs.
By successfully and repeatedly covering the 10 yards with each set of four downs, the team not only keeps possession of the ball but also moves downfield towards the opponents goal in search of a touchdown

CREWE RAILROADERS

The Railroaders were formed in November 1984 and played their first season of football in UKAFA where they became Central Division champions. They were eventually knocked out in the Quarter Finals, losing in overtime to Dunstable Cowboys. Highlights of the year were performances by Phil Oakes at running back, and receivers Gary Stanyer and Mark Edwards. For the Defense, captain Wayne Stanyer was outstanding . Last year the Railroaders joined the BAFL and played in the Anglo Conference Northern Division. The surprise discovery of the year was rookie wide receiver Steve Valentine who finished the season with the best statistics in the BAFL. Gavin Meredith emerged as a very capable Quarterback, passing for over 1000 yards, and Crewe became the only small club to have a player play for Great Britain

The 1987 season hasn't started well for Crewe, but with new players being introduced, it is hoped that before long they will be back to their winning ways.

WHAT THE PRESS SAID!

Locos off the rails

AMERICAN FOOTBALL : DERBY CRASH ON OPENING DAY

Locomotive Derby suffered the most humiliating defeat in their four year history at the hands of the leeds Cougars who showed why they are favourites to win the Premier Bowl this season.

They took Derby apart in stages: first the offensive line then the defence suffered as Leeds proved to be too quick to contain on the sweep.

Cougars quarter back Glenn Stevens teamed up well with running backs Tony "Tiggy" bell and Paul Pryce.

The first half saw Leeds with a 40:0 advantage. This alone was the most points ever to be scored against Locos whose largest previous defeat was:38:3 against UK champions Birmingham Bulls.

The second half saw Derby try to save face. The changed their quarterback and brought on Matt Nadin who is the master of the Derby running game but he too was unable to move the ball against the might of the Leeds defence.

Head coach John Warrington decided to return to a passing game and replaced him with starting quarterback Richard Parr.

Derby only had one real chance to score when Parr saw tight end Clifton Mitchell clear and made a 40 yard pass, under extreme pressure, only to see Mitchell unable to hold on to the ball.

Derby's MVP award went to Parr.

Head Coach John Warrington said after the game : "We now have two weeks to get back on to the practice pitch and get it right for our game against Scunthorpe Steelers

LEEDS COUGARS 74 V 00 WREKIN GIANTS

Last Sunday saw the Cougars first home game played in front of 700 fans at Farsley Celtic .

Leeds received the ball but a mix up by Tiggy bell gave Wrekin the ball on the Leeds 18 yard line.

The defence led by Keith Kelly got the ball straight back and the Cougar offence started off on their own 21 yard line. On the Fifth Play Tiggy broke away on a sweep right and went all the way for a 59 yard TD and he also added the 2 extra points.

The Giants next drive had more success when Gray connected with Dawes for a 38 yard pass but Paul Muscroft had the last laugh sacking Gray for a 6 yard loss and forcing Wrekin to punt the ball away, two Cougar plays later and Tiggy Bell was again in the endzone for a 50 yard TD.

The second was even more profitable with Tiggy running in three more TD's from 30, 43 and 31 yards. The final score of the half was a spectacular 48 yard TD pass from Glenn Stevens to TE Tim casey, plus a 10 yard TD pass to Sammy Pryce.

The Giants came alive in the third quarter with a 12 play drive of 46 yards which was stopped by Tony Bosah tackling the RB on a sweep - left 14 yards from the endzone. The offence spluttered through the rest of the quarter but the defence held out brilliantly and their best stand came at the beginning of the 4th when the Giants got to the Cougar 5 yard line, on 1st and goal, tackles from peter Huckleby, then Dave Haddon, on 3rd and Goal, all the Defensive line stopped any progress. Finally on 4th and goal, Zeph McIntosh finished the Giants offensive ideas. Eight minutes left saw Tiggy carry the ball for the only time in the second half and for 58 yards and 6 points. TD's followed in rapid succession by David McIntosh (2) and Paul Pryce. To finish the Scoring at 74-0

The Cougars are now the top point scorers in the Budweiser league with 152 points and hope to go over 200 today.
