Welcome
As owners of the Scunthorpe Steelers, may we take a few moments
of your time to welcome you. We hope you enjoy today's game and
that the whole afternoon appeals to you. We a Steel Centre 4 are
proud of the hard work and dedication shown by all members of the
Steelers squad in their playing record and in their numerous
charity events. A charity match played last year in Grimsby
raised over 400 pounds for the "Fliss Fund" - a charity
to provide financial aid to children suffering from spina bifida.
Another charity game, the "Hartford Motors Bowl" raised
280 pounds for hospital funds and Childline UK
The Steelers place great emphasis on charity work in the
community and so were delighted to be able to help these worthwhile charities.
Steel Centre 4 would like to specially thank "The Royal
Hotel" for providing after match refreshments for the
players at "Steelers". We are looking forward to a
continued alliance with the Royal Hotel
There was then a page explaining the basic rules (see previous
programmes for examples)
HISTORY OF THE STEELERS
The Scunthorpe Steelers were formed in February 1984. They were
first named the Brigg Jets but were re-named the Scunthorpe
Steelers after a better response was found in Scunthorpe. During
1984 they trained twice every week in preparation for their 1985
league debut in the Amateur American football Conference.
it was when coach Leland Sullivan came to the Steelers that they
began to become a better organised team. they were coached by
Leland in the basic techniques and the more complex procedures
within the game and by April 1985 they were ready for action.
Their record for the '85 season was : played 14 won 9 and lost 5.
They failed to make the AAFC Steel Bowl final'85 by points
difference only.
The end of the '85 season was when the steelers attracted the
attention of Steel Centre 4 - a steel processing firm based in
Scunthorpe - who offered sponsorship. the Steelers gratefully
accepted and began to expand the team. Fifty players in all were
recruited in time for the '86 season. With Steel Centre 4
providing the brand new strip and administrative back up the team
were confident of great success.
The Steelers were not disappointed. their '86 season was their
best ever. They played a total of 18 games won 16 and lost 2 one
of which was against the USAF Base Chicksands. As well as winning
all the trophy games, the Steelers became league Champions and
Steel Bowl Finalists. in the Steel Bowl they defeated Wirral
Wolves with a score of 50-32, the Wolves being the only other
team to beat the Steelers in 1986 in the AAFC

STEELETTES
Cheerleading is of immense benefit to American Football as you
will see by observing the cheerleaders in action.
Smartly turned out, well groomed, pretty girls demonstrating the
rigorous work outs and routines that entertain you the
spectators. this shows the dedication, hard work and commitment
that cheerleader have for their club wherever they may be from
They are a continual source of encouragement to the players,
staff and supporters who they represent at every game, charity
event or fund raising scheme.
We hope that every team is as proud of their cheerleaders as the
Steelers are of the "STEELETTES"
The Steelettes were formed also in 1984 and taught themselves the
basic routines right up to the present time. With girls leaving because of other commitments and recruiting new ones the line up
now is completely different. We thank them all for their support
and hard work.
The girls train for a total of 6 hours a week as a unit but many
other hours are spent rehearsing on their own.
